Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese to step down

Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese will step down from his position effective May 10, concluding a three-year tenure leading the department, city officials announced.

The City of Elkhart, Indiana said Assistant Chief Andy Whitmyer will serve as interim chief while Mayor Rod Roberson oversees the process of selecting and appointing a permanent replacement.

“Serving as Chief of Police is one of the most demanding roles in city government,” Roberson said in a statement. “Chief Milanese has carried that responsibility with professionalism and dedication throughout his tenure.”

In a statement released by the department, Milanese said his decision followed “much reflection, prayer, and discussions with my family.” He said he is stepping away to focus on personal priorities, including spending more time with family.

“I could not be more proud of this department and all we have accomplished together,” Milanese said. “Serving in this capacity has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career.”

Milanese added that he intends to take a short leave before returning to the department in a new role as a detective in the Criminal Investigations Division.

He also expressed confidence in the department’s leadership moving forward, noting that Interim Chief Whitmyer and command staff will continue building on recent progress.

“It has been my distinct honor to serve the community and the great men and women of this department,” Milanese said. “Our officers serve with integrity, compassion, professionalism, and with hearts dedicated to protecting our community.”

City officials confirmed Milanese’s planned transition back into investigative work following his time away from leadership.
