Voters face sheriff, state Senate and ballot decisions across Michiana

Voters in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties will decide a closely watched congressional race and several local contests Tuesday. Ballots in Berrien and Cass counties include statewide races, local proposals and recall questions.

In Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rudy Yakym is seeking a third term against Democrat Jamee Decio and Libertarian William Henry. The district includes South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart and Goshen.

A key local contest in St. Joseph County is the sheriff’s race. Democrat Scott Ruszkowski, who is retiring as South Bend’s police chief, faces Republican Rod Laureys, a St. Joseph County police corporal. The candidates have emphasized public safety, gun violence and staffing, while offering different approaches to crime prevention and cooperation among law enforcement agencies.

County voters will also choose a prosecutor between Democrat Amy Cressy and Republican John Maciejczyk.

In Elkhart County, a three-way contest for county commissioner in District 1 pits Democrat Ralph Spelbring and Republican Bob Barnes against independent candidate Amy Green. Other contested county races include circuit court clerk and county council seats.

Parts of both counties are in Indiana Senate District 11, where Republican Dr. Brian Schmutzler faces Democrat Gabrianna Gratzol. The four-year state Senate seat is one of the area’s major legislative contests.

Michigan voters in Berrien and Cass counties will help choose a governor and U.S. senator. The statewide matchups include Democrat Jocelyn Benson against Republican John James for governor, and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate. In Berrien County, voters will also decide a contested 17th District state Senate race between Democrat Ashleigh Baker and Republican Jonathan Lindsey, and a state House race between Democrat Angela Jones and Republican Brad Paquette.

Berrien County voters will choose a new Fifth District Court judge. Assistant public defender Jennifer Fields and assistant prosecutor Myrene Koch are competing for the open seat. Local ballot questions cover public safety, roads, libraries, transportation and marijuana businesses. Benton Harbor voters will consider a charter amendment establishing a Health Equality Committee. Baroda Township voters will decide whether the village of Baroda should disincorporate and whether to recall the township clerk. Michigan voters statewide will also decide whether to call a constitutional convention and consider a campaign-finance proposal.

In Cass County, voters will consider a recall of Vandalia Village President Evan Hickman. A separate recall question involves the Penn Township supervisor and trustee offices. Cass County ballots also include the governor, U.S. Senate and congressional races, as well as contests for the 17th District state Senate and 37th District state House seats.
