Suspect arrested for fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy in Michigan City

A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Michigan City earlier this month.

According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers were called around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15, to the 300 block of West 11th Street for reports of a juvenile who had been shot.

When officers arrived, they found 14-year-old Devin Porter suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency medical care before Porter was transported by LaPorte County EMS to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators with the department’s Investigative Division and Evidence Response Unit processed the scene and spent several days interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and gathering evidence.

Police identified 19-year-old Marcus Ballinger Jr., of Michigan City, as a suspect in the case. Authorities say Ballinger was taken into custody around 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, in the 1200 block of Ohio Street.

A probable cause affidavit was submitted to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office, and on Thursday, May 21, LaPorte County Circuit Court Judge Julianne Havens found probable cause to charge Ballinger with one count of murder.

Ballinger is being held on a $1 million cash bond.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests are expected. Anyone with information, surveillance footage, or cellphone video related to the shooting is asked to contact Detectives Kay Pliske or Brock Moore with the Michigan City Police Department.
