Body of missing teenager recovered from Lake Michigan in Michigan City

The body of a 13-year-old boy who went missing in Lake Michigan earlier this week has been recovered.

Authorities said dive teams located and recovered the boy’s body on Wednesday morning, June 24, near the rocks by the Michigan City Lighthouse in around 11 feet of water.

The search began Monday after emergency crews were called to Washington Park Beach following reports that the teenager entered the water south of the lighthouse and disappeared beneath the surface.

Search efforts continued for several days as multiple agencies worked to locate the boy.

During the initial rescue operation Monday evening, four divers were injured after rough conditions pushed them into nearby rocks. Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

At the time of the incident, a Beach Hazards Warning had been issued for the Lake Michigan shoreline by the National Weather Service, warning of dangerous swimming conditions.
