Two killed in Elkhart County crash involving motorcycle and SUV

Two people were killed in a crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV in Elkhart County.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just after 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 5,  at the intersection of State Road 13 and County Road 148.

Investigators say a 2014 Nissan Rogue was traveling south on State Road 13 behind a 1963 Triumph T6R motorcycle. The motorcycle had slowed or stopped in traffic while preparing to turn west onto County Road 148 when the Nissan struck it from behind.

The impact sent the motorcycle off the west side of the roadway and into a field. The Nissan also left the roadway and came to a stop in the field.

The motorcycle driver, 64-year-old Lowell Penner of Ligonier, and his passenger, 58-year-old Leah Lichtenberger of Ligonier, suffered fatal injuries.

The driver of the Nissan was not injured and was taken to Goshen Hospital for a blood draw as part of the investigation.

The roadway was dry and weather conditions were clear at the time of the crash.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigations Team is handling the investigation. No citations or charges have been announced.
