Substance use among Indiana students continues to decline, with several measures reaching their lowest levels since 2015, according to a new Indiana University survey.

The 2026 Indiana Youth Survey collected responses from 53,879 students in grades six through 12 at 183 schools across Indiana.

“We were actually seeing statistically significant decreases from many substances in many grade levels,” IU Associate Professor Jon Agley told FOX 59.

Past-month alcohol use among students fell to its lowest level since 2015. Marijuana and vaping also declined across most grade levels.

Among high school seniors, past-month vaping fell to 8.2% this year, down from 28.6% in 2018.

Among students who reported using marijuana in the past month, vaping was the most common method of use. Electronic vapor products also remained the most-used tobacco product among Indiana students.

The survey also found heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and other illicit drug use remained uncommon among Indiana students.
