South Bend fire crews respond to multiple overnight emergencies

The South Bend Fire Department responded to a series of emergencies Friday night, Dec. 26, into early Saturday morning, including two structure fires and a carbon monoxide incident.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Friday, firefighters were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Eddy Street at Brother’s Bar & Grill after reports of high carbon monoxide levels. Upon arrival, crews confirmed elevated readings and called for additional companies due to the large number of patrons inside the restaurant and apartments located above it. The building was evacuated and thoroughly checked. No one was transported to the hospital. The source of the carbon monoxide was identified and isolated, and the restaurant remained closed for the remainder of the night.

Around 11:30 p.m., crews were called to the 400 block of East Chippewa Avenue for a reported residential fire. Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing and located a fire on the first floor of the home. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. The home was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to another residential fire in the 1200 block of Miner Street after neighbors reported hearing smoke alarms. Crews found smoke coming from a two-story home, with fire on the first floor that had extended to the second floor. The fire was contained within approximately 30 minutes. No one was home, and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials did not release damage estimates for either fire.
