On Tuesday, July 28, South Bend Police responded to the area of Nimtz Parkway and Bendix Drive on the report of a male firing a gun at passing traffic.

Upon arrival, officers located a man matching the description provided by 9-1-1 callers. Officers observed a handgun in the male’s pocket. Officers removed and secured the weapon as the investigation continued.

Other officers spoke to witnesses, who reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing the man pointing a gun toward vehicles. One witness stated that the man fired across four lanes of traffic.

The man told officers that he owned the gun but denied firing it. He stated it had been unloaded for more than a week.

Officers recovered four spent shell casings from the area where the shots were reported.

Through the investigation, the suspect, 45-year-old Shaun Norton, was ultimately arrested and transported to the St. Joseph County Jail.

While at the jail, jail staff reported that a baggie containing a clear crystal-like substance fell from Norton’s

underwear during a search.

The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

On Thursday, July 30, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Norton with the following:

– Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony)

– Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony)

– Pointing a Firearm (Level 6 Felony)

– Pointing a Firearm (Level 6 Felony)

– Possession of Methamphetamine (Level 3 Felony)

Norton is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
