Elkhart man arrested after allegedly driving stolen van with missing tire on toll road

An Elkhart man was arrested after Indiana State Police say a trooper spotted him driving a stolen vehicle along the Indiana Toll Road with a missing front tire.

Police say a trooper was patrolling near mile marker 77 around 8:45 p.m. Monday when she noticed a Chevrolet traveling eastbound without its front driver’s-side tire. The vehicle was traveling on the rim, sending sparks onto the roadway.

The trooper stopped the vehicle near mile marker 78.4. Police identified the driver as 30-year-old Antoine Deberry of Elkhart.

During the stop, the trooper reportedly noticed an open alcoholic beverage in a cupholder and suspected Deberry was intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital for a chemical test.

Investigators later determined the vehicle had been reported stolen in Elkhart County.

Deberry was arrested on preliminary charges including auto theft, operating while intoxicated with endangerment, OWI with a prior conviction, driving while suspended and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license.

He was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.
