Mishawaka man, 19, charged after standoff in Elkhart
A 19-year-old Mishawaka man is facing felony charges after a standoff at an Elkhart home last week.
Police say Efren Oregon Jr. was arrested after officers responded to a domestic disturbance on Fremont Street on October 16. He’s charged with aggravated battery, intimidation with a deadly weapon and domestic battery in the presence of a child under 16. His initial hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the caller told police Oregon had threatened her with a gun during an argument and later held it to her head. The affidavit says Oregon also directed her to call another man to the home so he could shoot him.
When an officer approached the home, police heard six to eight gunshots. A vehicle outside was hit by gunfire, but its driver was not hurt.
The Elkhart Regional SWAT Team searched the home, but Oregon was not there. Indiana State Police later helped locate him using his cellphone. He was arrested during a traffic stop in Mishawaka and taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
