Distraction cited in crash involving Elkhart police squad car

UPDATE:  An Elkhart police sergeant was treated for minor bruising after his squad car struck a parked vehicle and rolled onto its side Tuesday evening in Elkhart.

The marked Ford Explorer was traveling west on West Franklin Street when it hit an unoccupied Chevrolet Impala parked on the north side of the street between South Fifth Street and Franklin Court, police said. The sergeant got out of the vehicle and was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office crash report, the sergeant was responding to a welfare call but was not using emergency lights or a siren. He told investigators he briefly looked away from the road to find an item and did not have time to brake before the collision.

Interior camera footage showed the squad car traveling between 27 and 32 mph immediately before and during the crash, according to the police department. The sheriff’s office identified driver distraction as the primary factor. There is no indication impairment contributed to the crash, and results of the sergeant’s required post-incident alcohol and drug screening are pending.

The sheriff’s office investigated because the crash involved an Elkhart police officer. The case will be reviewed by the department’s Chief’s Review Board, which evaluates crashes involving officers driving city-owned vehicles and recommends whether their actions followed department policy.
