A woman was arrested and a male suspect was found dead following a shooting involving an Indiana State Police trooper Friday afternoon in rural LaPorte County.

Police say a trooper was flagged down around 3:15 p.m. by a concerned citizen who reported two suspicious people walking on County Road 125 East, south of County Road 900 North. The pair had reportedly approached a family member.

The trooper located a man and woman and began speaking with them. Investigators say the man pulled a handgun from his waistband after the trooper asked for identification.

The trooper drove away as the suspect fired, striking the patrol vehicle twice. The trooper was not injured.

Both suspects then ran into a wooded area near 8525 North 125 East. The woman later came out of the woods and surrendered, while police launched a search for the man.

Indiana State Police SWAT officers entered a nearby home in the 8300 block of North 125 East around 7:40 p.m. Police say they found the male suspect dead in the basement from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found nearby.

The LaPorte County Coroner is working to confirm the man’s identity. Police say an initial report of a possible third suspect was not accurate.

Erica D. Bowman, 20, of Elkhart, was taken to the LaPorte County Jail. Potential charges are pending review by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office.
