The victim of a deadly house fire south of Mishawaka has been identified.

The St. Joseph County Police Department says 76-year-old James Drake died inside the home on Valley Trail, near Dragoon Trail.

An autopsy determined Drake died from smoke inhalation.

The fire happened early in the morning of Wednesday, Sep. 2.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and St. Joseph County police are continuing to investigate what caused the fire and the circumstances surrounding Drake’s death.
