Indiana is expected to receive up to $5 million in federal assistance to help cover emergency response costs following severe storms and flooding that have affected communities across the state this week.

Gov. Mike Braun announced the anticipated federal assistance Saturday after speaking with President Donald Trump. Braun said Trump intends to approve his request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration.

The federal assistance could help pay for eligible emergency response activities, including water rescues, sandbagging and flood-fighting operations, evacuations and shelters, emergency supplies, medical transportation and efforts to provide access to communities affected by the storms.

Indiana’s State Emergency Operations Center remains activated at Level III as state agencies, the Indiana National Guard and local emergency responders continue operations.

Seventy-two Indiana National Guard personnel have been activated, while 48 Indiana Department of Natural Resources officers are assisting with response efforts. Indiana Department of Transportation crews are monitoring roads, clearing debris and assessing damage to determine when roads can safely reopen.

Power outages across the state have declined to about 160,000, down from a peak of more than 300,000. Most of the remaining outages are concentrated in Lake County. Power was restored Friday in Laurel in Franklin County.

In other areas, emergency response and recovery efforts remain underway.

More than 350 evacuations have taken place in Delaware County. Responders and volunteers in Fayette County continue conducting rescues and welfare checks. Evacuations were also underway Saturday in portions of Marion County and at a senior mobile home community in Tipton County.

Henry County is beginning to transition into recovery, with cleanup crews moving into the area. In southeastern Indiana, officials are beginning damage assessments and recovery planning as floodwaters recede.

Braun declared a statewide disaster emergency Thursday and requested a Presidential Emergency Declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday.

Local disaster declarations have been issued in Carroll, Dearborn, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Henry, Lake, Madison, Marion, Porter, Pulaski, Putnam, Tipton and Wayne counties, as well as in Attica, Flora, Carmel, Noblesville and New Chicago.

Braun said state agencies will remain engaged with local communities as Indiana moves from immediate storm response into recovery.
