New information into pedestrian death at Sample and Michigan in South Bend

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) is investigating an incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian Sunday afternoon in South Bend.

South Bend Police were called to the intersection of Sample and Michigan streets around 4:45 p.m. on June 21 after receiving reports that a person had been struck by a vehicle.

Officers arriving at the scene found 26-year-old Christopher Kyle Windham suffering from severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Authorities said his family has been notified.

According to a preliminary investigation by FACT, Windham had been riding in the passenger seat of a vehicle that stopped at a red light at the intersection. Investigators say Windham exited the vehicle and approached a truck stopped directly in front of him, which was being driven by someone he knew.

For reasons that remain under investigation, Windham reportedly attempted to open the truck’s passenger-side door while the vehicle was stopped. Witnesses told investigators that when the traffic signal turned green and the truck began moving, Windham continued holding onto the door handle and ran alongside the vehicle before falling.

Authorities say Windham was then struck by the truck.

The investigation remains ongoing.
