Busy weekend for South Bend Fire crews

The South Bend Fire Department responded to three separate fires between Friday night and early Sunday morning, including two residential structure fires and a garage fire.

The first fire was reported around 10:45 p.m. Friday in an alley between Huey and O’Brien streets. Fire crews arrived to find a detached garage fully engulfed in flames. Officials said sagging overhead power lines created additional hazards for firefighters as they worked to contain the blaze. An adjacent garage was also affected and began to smoke. Firefighters brought the fire under control and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the eaves of the home and confirmed an active fire inside the structure. Reports indicated dogs were still inside the residence. One dog escaped on its own while firefighters rescued a second dog from the home. The fire was contained within about 20 minutes. Investigators believe improperly discarded smoking materials may have caused the fire, though the investigation remains ongoing.)

The third fire happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of South Bendix Drive. Firefighters arrived to find brown smoke coming from the second floor of the home and confirmed another working fire. Crews brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. Following the incident, one firefighter reported feeling ill and was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

No residents were injured in any of the fires. All three incidents remain under investigation.
