The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office has released an update on Deputy Jon Samuelson following Thursday’s shooting at Franciscan Health Hospital’s Michigan City campus.
Sheriff Ronald Heeg said Deputy Samuelson was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend after the incident for advanced medical treatment. According to the sheriff’s office, Samuelson underwent approximately eight hours of surgery, which surgeons later described as successful.
Medical staff said they remain optimistic about the deputy’s recovery. Samuelson remains in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Memorial Hospital.
“Thank you to the surgeons and the entire medical staff at Memorial Hospital for the exceptional care being provided to Deputy Samuelson,” Sheriff Heeg said in a statement. “Please continue to pray for Jon, his family and friends, and the entire law enforcement community.”
Deputy Samuelson is a 12-year veteran of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. He currently serves in the department’s Highway Interdiction Unit, is the handler for K-9 Bosco, and also serves as a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Officer based out of the Merrillville District Office.
Authorities have described the hospital shooting as a senseless act. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
