Domestic disturbance suspect charged after allegedly injuring two South Bend Police officers

A South Bend man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he injured two South Bend Police officers during a domestic disturbance investigation.

According to South Bend Police, officers responded around 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, to the 1600 block of Fremont Street on reports of a domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived, they spoke with a woman who said her brother, identified as 41-year-old Steven Fox, had assaulted her. Police reported officers observed a welt on the side of the victim’s head.

Police say officers attempted to detain Fox, but he resisted as they tried to place him in handcuffs. According to investigators, Fox pulled his arm away from officers and ignored repeated commands to put his hands behind his back.

After officers warned Fox several times that a taser would be used if he continued resisting, an officer deployed a taser, police said.

Authorities say Fox continued resisting and ran toward one of the officers, striking the officer in the vest and knocking him to the ground.

During the struggle, another officer drew her taser before Fox allegedly grabbed for it and punched the officer in the nose while she attempted to restrain him.

Officers eventually detained Fox and placed him in handcuffs.

One officer suffered a broken nose, while another suffered a dislocated finger. Both officers were treated at a hospital.

On Monday, May 18, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Fox with multiple offenses, including two counts of resisting law enforcement as Level 5 felonies, disarming a law enforcement officer as a Level 5 felony, domestic battery as a Level 6 felony, and several misdemeanor counts of resisting law enforcement and domestic battery.

Fox remains held in the St. Joseph County Jail.
